Ada Lovelace - Mathematics and Computer Pioneer

Augusta Ada Byron was the only legitimate child of the Romantic poet, George Gordon, Lord Byron. Her mother was Anne Isabella Milbanke who took the one-month-old baby away from her fathers home. Ada Augusta Byron never saw her father again; he died when she was eight. Ada Lovelaces mother, who had studied mathematics herself, decided that her daughter would be spared the fathers eccentricities by studying more logical subjects like math and science, rather than literature or poetry. Young Ada Lovelace showed a genius for mathematics from an early age. Her tutors included William Frend, William King, and Mary Somerville. She also learned music, drawing, and languages, and became fluent in French. The Influence of Charles Babbage Ada Lovelace met Charles Babbage in 1833 and became interested in a model he had constructed of a mechanical device to compute values of quadratic functions, the Difference Engine. She also studied his ideas on another machine, the Analytical Engine, which would use punched cards to read instructions and data for solving mathematical problems. Babbage also became Lovelaces mentor and helped Ada Lovelace begin mathematical studies with Augustus de Moyan in 1840 at the University of London. Babbage himself never wrote about his own inventions, but in 1842, an Italian engineer Manabrea (later Italys prime minister) described Babbages Analytical Engine in an article published in French. Ada Lovelace was asked to translate this article into English for a British scientific journal. She added many notes of her own to the translation since she was familiar with Babbages work. Her additions showed how Babbages Analytical Engine would work, and gave a set of instructions for using the Engine for calculating Bernoulli numbers. She published the translation and notes under the initials A.A.L, concealing her identity as did many women who published before women were more accepted as intellectual equals. Marriage, Death, and Legacy of Ada Lovelace Augusta Ada Byron married a William King (though not the same William King who had been her tutor) in 1835. In 1838 her husband became the first Earl of Lovelace, and Ada became countess of Lovelace. They had three children. Ada Lovelace unknowingly developed an addiction to prescribed drugs including laudanum, opium and morphine, and displayed classic mood swings and withdrawal symptoms. She took up gambling and lost most of her fortune. She was suspected of an affair with a gambling comrade. In 1852, Ada Lovelace died of uterine cancer. She was buried next to her famous father. More than a hundred years after her death, in 1953, Ada Lovelaces notes on Babbages Analytical Engine were republished after having been forgotten. The engine was now recognized as a model for a computer, and Ada Lovelaces notes as a description of a computer and software. In 1980, the U.S. Department of Defense settled on the name Ada for a new standardized computer language, named in honor of Ada Lovelace. William Faulkner s Barn Burning - 2297 Words

William Faulkner wrote many of his stories to take place in the south. The reason for this is he was born and lived in Mississippi and because of this the south had a special place in his heart. Faulkner used his own life and issues of his day to create a county in Mississippi where all of his stories take place. Faulkner was a very inspirational writer for people living in southern states. Using his own personal experiences as well as taking inspiration from his favorite writers, William Faulkner wrote â€Å"Barn Burning† and his other works about the struggles of living life in the south for white and black people during the civil rights movement. William Faulkner used his knowledge of his most loved author’s writing styles to help design his†¦show more content†¦When asked if he wrote good contemporaries Faulkner said, â€Å"All of us failed to match our dream of perfection. It is our job to learn from another’s failure, so we can be great†(Stein). Faulkner acknowledged that no person on this earth is perfect and that we all make mistakes in our lives but he also understood that it is through those mistakes of the people before us and even our own that we learn to grow as a person and not to make the same mistakes and to find a way for us to become the best person we can be. Faulkner knew that he was responsible for inspiring people to write the same way he was inspired by the writers that came before him. After being asked about who inspired him as a writer the most Faulkner responded, â€Å"He was the father of my generation of American writers and the tradition of American writing which our successors will carry on. He has never received his proper evaluation. Dreiser is his older brother and Mark Twain the father of them both†(Stein). Faulkner knew that without the people who came before him he wouldn’t have written about the things he did. He knew that he was not the beginning of a new generation of writers and writing style but one of the writers who got to partake in one of the greatest times of writing in American history. Faulkner’s writings were a major influence for people to fight against social injustice. In this scene an old man tells Lucas, â€Å"Some things

The Plan For Public Health And Safety - 1733 Words

The next component of the General Plan is the plan for public health and safety which addresses issues of: Geology and Seismicity, Flooding and Drainage, Noise, Air Installation Land Use Compatibility, Hazardous Materials, Crime Prevention and Protection Services, Fire Prevention and Suppression Services, Disaster Preparedness, Emergency Medical Facilities. The issue of geology and seismicity is important to the Lancaster area at large due to its location being less than ten miles south of the San Andreas Fault. Major earthquakes in the area present a problem for citizen’s safety and possible property damage. A similar issue is that of flooding and drainage. Because Lancaster exists within a valley and is relatively flat, the area is prone to flooding. One of the current propositions is to include flood water basins. The water basins to mitigate for the 100 year flood are essentially large ditches on the corner of neighborhood streets. When a water basin sits in the middle of a neighborhood it is not a functional part of the surrounding environment and can become an eyesore in a community. This probably causes the NIMBY-ism around water basins, no matter how beneficial they may be. Noise is a very prevalent issue in Lancaster, due to the amount of aeronautical activity conducted on EAFB. The City has rezoned the flight area in order to decrease the amount of overhead flights in the urbanized areas. This plan is mimicked in the Air Installation Land Use Compatibility portion.Show MoreRelatedRegulatory Issues Impacting Development of an Emergency Preparedness and Management Plan1573 Words   |  7 PagesEmergency Preparedness and Management Plan is complex. Brand Switching in the Telecommunications Industry-Free-Samples for St

Question: Brand switching (or Churn) is a major problem in the telecommunications industry. You are required to review the current literature on Brand Switching and write a literature review which could be suitable for publication in an academic marketing journal. Answer: According to Islam et al. (2016) every member of the Australian population has more than one subscription of mobile phone. As a result of that, there are a number of issues pertaining to the mobile phone service providers which has posed to be a challenge in the retention of customers. Although there are a number of switching models for analyzing the behavior of the customers but those are not helpful due to the difference in the market structure. This article has discussed about the data mining techniques for identifying the switching patterns without any kind of models or domain knowledge. Various interesting patterns were talked about in this paper from the perspective of marketing and brand switching. Yeboah, Junior and Adonteng-Sakyi (2017) on the other hand, have mentioned that the increase in the number of telecom service providers has given rise to mobile number portability leading to increased competition for the existing service providers. This particular study has analyzed the effect of brand on the purchasing pattern in the mobile and telecommunication industry. It was found out in this study that the customers do not see much difference among the service providers apart from the service provided and the price they are paying for it. It has also observed that the customers do not think twice before switching from one provider if they feel that the other providers are giving better service quality. Thus, it becomes the responsibility of the brand to make their service quality a motivating factor for the retention of the customers. Rite Aid Corporation

During the 2010s, Rite Aid Corporation, as one of the leading pharmacy retailers in the USA, suffers from the significant economic pressure and intensified competition within the industry. The observed financial losses of the company support the idea that Rite Aid Corporation needs the revision of the current managerial and economic strategies implemented and followed in the company.Advertising We will write a custom case study sample on Rite Aid Corporation specifically for you for only $16.05 $11/page Learn More Today, the company has to compete with such giants of the industry as Walgreens Corporation and CVS Caremark Corporation. However, the financial reports provided by Rite Aid Corporation state that the company needs to cope with the debts and to improve the work of run-down stores to change the situation for better and to focus on the effective strategic management (Hitt, Ireland, and Hoskisson). That is why, it is essential to identify the prob lems and challenges experienced by the company which prevent it from concentrating on the competitive advantage and from creating value within the competitive industry, and it is necessary to analyze the alternatives to propose the plan of the further actions. The economic activities and profitability of Rite Aid Corporation are characterized by significant unmanageable debts and underperforming stores which organization and management are not capable to attract the variety of customers typical for the industry. Thus, the economic and financial losses associated with the performance of run-down stores are the main problem of Rite Aid Corporation. The next connected problem is the intensive competition within the industry, which cannot be won until Rite Aid Corporation solves its financial and strategic issues. The associated problems or challenges to influence the development of the company negatively are the shortage of professionals characteristic for the industry in general and t he decrease in number of less expensive generics which can contribute to improving the retailer’s economic situation. The next global problem which influences Rite Aid Corporation directly is the trends to change retailing pharmacy with the other services such as mail-order pharmacies (Hitt, Ireland, and Hoskisson).Advertising Looking for case study on business economics? Let's see if we can help you! Get your first paper with 15% OFF Learn More Thus, the existing alternatives to cope with the problems in relation to the current industry tendencies are the expansion of the services to involve the mail-order pharmacy functions and sales according to the specific Internet-based drug prescription services. Furthermore, it is essential to focus on in-store clinic market as the potential for development. While orienting to the mail-order pharmacy functions, Rite Aid Corporation can provide customers with convenient and cost-saving services. The pros of the alternati ve are in possibilities to refer to the experience of CVS Caremark Corporation. The focus on the Internet-based drug prescription services is advantageous because of expanding the company’s frames, but this shift can be too challenging. The in-store clinic market is competitive because of the presence of Walgreens Corporation, but it provides the space for the expansion. From this point, the proposed actions should be based on orienting to the mail-order pharmacy functions because of the apparent profitability of the sphere, and this action can contribute to overcoming the experienced financial losses. The company can become less dependent on the industry’s development while expanding the frames for competition and providing the mail-order pharmacy services. The decrease in number of less expensive generics can be overcome with changing the pricing policy and avoiding strict financial controls typical for the company’s stores. Furthermore, the problem with the s hortage of professionals can be resolved with references to the company’s optimization and focus on providing the additional mail-order pharmacy services. The discussed actions can have more positive consequences than negative ones because Rite Aid Corporation will rely on the new trends within the industry while expanding the frames also in the company’s strategic management. The fact of adding the mail-order pharmacy functions can require the changes in the strategies, but the overall results are expected to be positive.
